I can't properly understand your issue. >From your message appears that you have to select your user in the lower pane to access your display pictures; but your display pictures should appear in the upper pane, as the lower one is for the cached display pictures of the other contacts. Maybe you have your own account between your contacts? This could explain it.
P.S.: I forgot adding the default display pictures in the upper pane; I'll send a third patch ASAP.
