Hello,
I'm planning a release of 0.97 for March 1st, if you all remember... And for
that matter, I'm thinking about
rewarding the team members who worked hard on amsn 0.97. We already talked
about this, we were thinking about
rewards, as in money compensation for every commit/feature/whatever, but I
think I have a much greater idea :
We'll be giving gifts!
I'm thinking about giving gifts to those who helped, and gifts to the most
active developers, maybe depending on
the work done, give appropriate gifts, I'm hoping for a "big gift", something
like the nintendo wii or psp, as
well as medium sized gifts and smaller gifts.
My idea is :
1 "big" gift
4 or 5 medium sized gifts
a lot of smaller gifts.
I'm thinking of something of the price range of the nintendo wii or psp for the
"big" gift, but it's a bit too
expansive too, but we'll see when the time comes... and giving that gift away
randomly to one of the most active
developers (depending on the workload, could be a randomly chosen person out of
the 5, 6 or 7 most active
developers). Then give medium sized gifts to the 5 most active developers (I
wonder if the one who won the big
gift should receive a medium sized one too, or should be 'disqualified'?), gift
ideas would be something like a
webcam, a 1GB usb flash stick, mp3 players, etc... and finally, smaller gifts
could be given, like for example :
http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/8c52/ or t-shirts, or whatever
little goodies...
What I think would just be great is to have a custom made t-shirt, with the
amsn logo which says something like
"I'm part of the team", or "I helped create aMSN v0.97" or something maybe more
funny :p, whatever that would
be, and have that shirt sent to all those who helped, any commiter, forum
super-power-users, Gus for his skins..
but I think it would cost too much... so I really don't know, I just had all
those great ideas, and I would
like to have your opinions on this.
First, if anyone has an idea or something, it would be good to add it. then it
would be good to have all the
'rules' in writting in the wiki. then decide on how to proceed.
I think it would be best if the list of possible gifts was created, then those
who deserve a gift would get to
choose one of the list, so you don't get a gift you didn't want.
Ok, I've set up a wiki page here : http://www.amsn-project.net/wiki/Gift_ideas
You can add gift ideas in there if you want, so we can build up a list, then
the 'winners' can choose from
there.
We could also decide on some gifts then randomly give to those who won, then
allow 'negociations' to start so
there can be a gift exchange, if you like someone else's gift and he likes
yours, you can exchange, etc...

Just so you know, IIRC, the most active devels so far, in order of activity,
since revision 7500 (release of
0.96 although commits to branch/trunk for 0.97 were done before the 0.96
release...) are :
lephilousophe with 58 commits
kakaroto with 56 commits (this doesn't count the commits I was doing a local
svn repository when developing
libsiren)
vivia with 46 commits
scapor with 41 commits
tomhennigan with 24 commits
airadier with 22 commits
and billiob with 19 commits

Again, if we check since revision 7342 (the date the ads were added to the
website), then it is :
kakaroto with 86 commits
lephilousophe with 69 commits
vivia with 68 commits
scapor with 41 commits
tomhennigan with 35 commits
airadier with 32 commits
and billiob with 21 commits

When you also look at the effort given for the 0.97 in terms of participation
in the forums as well as the key
features, we have the OIM, voice clips, msn spaces, +stability. those features
were mostly worked on by :
kakaroto, lephilousophe, vivia, scapor, billiob.
Alvaro got included because of the translation, and I guess tomhennigan because
of patches and mac compatibility
issues.

So... Please add ideas to the wiki so we can all benefit from it... i also
found this link
http://msdn.microsoft.com/coding4fun/article.aspx?articleid=1228621 when I was
googling for "gift ideas for
developpers" so maybe you can get ideas from there... and tell me what you
think...
If you want to discuss anything, do it over the ML, don't use the discussion
page of the wiki, and don't write
anything in the wiki apart new gift ideas, don't delete other's ideas (you can
report here that someone posted
an idea with value 10000$ and I can decide whether to remove it), and you can
not change the rules or whatever
from the wiki, we'll discuss it here and I'll change it myself.

I think this idea will be something that we'll all like better than giving
money based on commit/diff length, so
I hope everyone agrees to it.

p.s: I wonder how much it will cost, + the shipping :s but if necessary, I'm
willing to donate to help this gift
idea, as I think it's a good idea and people deserve to have some fun from time
to time, right? :)
