I don't think I've ever had 40 contacts online at anyone time.

However I do usually have 20 contacts online in the evening, and my  
full CL comes to just over 100. I've had chats with over 10 users at  
a time (usually I chat to about 6 users simultaneously), and even  
though aMSN is slightly laggy with quite a few chats open, it is 100%  
usable.
