Well I was half right then. ;-)

Hmmm. In my case it was working fine when I was manually 
uncompressing my log files before analyzing them. I didn't have to 
specify any log format. When I started having analog uncompress 
them, all the records were specified as corrupt. I had to specifically 
state a log format of combined before it would recognize them. 
Perhaps it is something peculiar to my OS or my version of gzip. I 
am using Windows 3.11 and a version of gzip ported to dos.
