Not sure that my mileage is you problem, but may be of interest...

My experience of Open Transport is that under some conditions (unknown when
this occurs), failure of a DNS lookups causes the IP stack to hang. It gets so
bad that even ping'ing the machine does not work. A forcible quit of the
process usually goes OK - but afterwards a system restart seems a safe bet. IE,
Netscape and Eudora all seem to have the same problem. I have a DNS lookup
utility, which seems to have an internal mechanism for killing off gethostent()
lookups (or whatever they are under MacOS) and restoring sanity. Problem I have
found is that it is intermittent and just one of the (many) foibles of MacOS
and TCP. Apple do not seems too interested. [I am running 8.6 UK edition.]
