This sounds a little like a problem that came up with log files with 
Unicode (dual byte) characters in them. Analog will react something like 
how you describe if the log file is in Unicode format. I don't think we 
ever figured out a reliable way to convert the files back to regular 
single byte characters but there must be a way, perhaps someone else on 
the list knows?

That isn't the only possibility, but it seems plausible.
