Actually, it recognises all the formats that the previous one was meant to
recognise, and some more. The problem is that in order to understand more
formats (and indeed configurable formats) it does a bit more checking on the
format, so it is a bit less forgiving with variations. (In particular, it
used to be OK to stick extra fields onto the end of common log format. No
longer).
