I downloaded the new version to try the form interface, and I'm afraid I
got an unpleasant surprise. anlgform is now implemented as a perl
script, and I don't have perl installed on my server, so I couldn't use
it.
I'm not knocking perl, and the ActiveState implementation is very
impressive, but I'm not going to be able to get permission to install it
on our production NT servers. I hope someone will implement this
functionality as a standalone .EXE. (The perl script approach is
obviously much more flexible, but one of the attractions of Analog is
that it doesn't involve the installation of any DLLs or registry
entries).
I installed ActiveState Perl on my workstation, and made the necessary
config changes. I was interesed in testing the new form interface
because I had bugged Stephen about allowing multiple log files to be
selected, and this works very nicely. By adding
<SELECT MULTIPLE NAME="LOGFILE">
<option value="c:\logs\ex9907.log">July
<option value="c:\logs\ex9908.log">August
<option value="c:\logs\ex9909.log">September
</SELECT>
to the form, I can easily select all three months, or just July and
August, or even July and September, if I want to.
I encountered a problem when I tried to use QV=1 to debug my
configuration, but this seems to be a problem with the way Internet
Enplorer handles URLs. Even though the the script sets the Content-Type:
header properly, IE prompted me for a location to save the file, rather
than displaying it in the browser. This happens on two machines that I
tried it on (one with IE4, one with IE5), but two other machines
displayed the qv=1 output in the browser (one with Netscape 3.x, and the
other with IE5 on Windows 2000).
(For anyone who is interested in using the forms interface on Windows 9x
or NT, you can get the ActiveState perl from www.activestate.com).
