Oooerrr... mega-blush time... I picked out a few lines with search engine
bits in... ran them through analog and got nothing.

Strange, thought I... so I looked at the lines more closely... (this is
where the big blush comes) I'd specified the logformat wrong, so it wasn't
actually getting the referrer entries at all :-(

That still didn't explain the chache:xxx entries I was getting though, so I
unpacked all the old log files and did a search through them for 'cache:'...
lo and behold, it appeared on quite a few lines, those four numbers amongst
them... four lines were messed up and this value just happened to have been
in the field where I had misplaced the referrer entry... they were the 'q='
entry on a reference from www.google.com!!

Now I'm trying to work out why there are a bunch of corrupted lines (those
were the only search engine matches in the corrupted section, so that's why
only those four entries appeared!).

I'm so sorry for wasting your time unnecessarily.

Thank you for such a wonderful program... (I used to run it a long time ago
on the my Archimedes when it was at version 2.something.)
