Thanks for the pointers!
I had forgotten to strip out the 1st field that indicated the virtual web
site and I'm now using the following in Apache:
LogFormat "%V %h %l %u %t \"%r\" %s %b \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-agent}i\""
common
And everything seems fine now.
