It works! Woohoo! My thanks to everybody who tried to help. Actually, for
the record (and because I still don't understand why!) this is what
happened:

I started again from download, only this time I watched exactly what
happened the first time I ran Analog and got the example result. Then I
surreptitiously changed my logfile's name to logfile.log, substituted it for
the original logfile.log, and ran Analog. AHA! Up popped the result, with my
data all analyzed. Only then did I look at the config file...

This is the part I don't get: If the # symbol makes a line into a comment
(thus making it invisible to the program, right?) how come the program works
with the # in front of the OUTFILE line? Because I didn't change *anything*
in the analog.cfg file until I had it going, and it starts out with that
confusticating # in front of the OUTFILE line.

But anyhow I got it going, and I'm having big fun playing with the stuff in
the big.cfg file!

Thanks again everyone! Particular thanks to Stephen for building the beast
to begin with (and for telling me how to get my mailbox to accept list
messages).

Yours faithfully,

The Grateful Captain Overkill
