Thanks to everyone for all the help: I've followed the advice given and
opened the files successfully with gzip. I had already tried WinZip which,
in its Windows incarnation (v8) doesn't recognise the .sys.z files as
archives.
However, on opening some of the files, there's no data in them, which is
weird because there should be quite a lot. I suspect this is not an analog
problem, but must be something to do with the way Apache or Solaris is set
up on the server, so not an issue for this list. I shall pursue, unless
insanity gets me first...
