This is the simplest way. Make sure to rotate the logfile first before
turning it into a cache file of course, so that its contents is finalised.

Well, yes, it is possible. Keep only one cache file, use it and the
newly-retired logfile to make the new version of the cache file, then move
the new version on top of the old version.
I don't recommend this however, as I think it's conceptually harder, and
also if you corrupt the cache file accidentally you've lost everything. You
will save a little disk space and future processing time, but Scenario Two
probably saves enough already.
