Ok - I think what I'm looking for is a pointer to whether it is a good idea
to use the extended logfile standard, or whether it's smarter to invent my
own. I don't know if you can answer this (since you also don't know what I
will put in the log), but I thought that maybe somebody had done something
similar before. I guess the only benefit is that I can use standard tools to
read/analyze the log, and the fact that I'm using a standard might make my
design more robust!? Am I too long away from reality?

Well, the defined fields are very webserver-y fields. (See the spec, at
http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-logfile.html). I guess you could have an extended
extended log format, along the same lines.
