Could you not just grep all the 401 lines out of your log files and
feed that through analog. The daily reports would show the distribution
over hours and the hosts report would give a good picture if the number of
different hosts involved (ISPs changing ip addresses mid session allowing).
Also the request report would give you the items which caused the 401 errors
be it a gif, html page ....
