File system visability is controled by a file in / called .hidden (note
the leading period) on the OS X volume. Edit .hidden and remove "var"
from the file. Save it and open a new Finder window and it should show
up.

There are no guarantees that this won't break something else but my guess
is that is an unlikely occurance.
