Yes, I read and reread the documentation on pie charts in
docs/othreps.html.  The problem was that it didn't give me a clue that I
could do so by adding a second chart line, a-la:

(having used the big configuration file as a starting point)

# Whether and how pie charts are plotted: see docs/othreps.html
ORGCHART ON
STATUSCHART ON
TYPECHART ON
SIZECHART ON
SIZECHART BYTES <==== second line

But please don't think that I didn't RTFM.
