I guess there's no easy way of doing what I wanted to extract.
Essentially, I'm dealing with a variable entry form that allows the
user to select the search criteria plus search value and I was looking
for a way of matching criteria to value before reporting internal
search results.

Well, analog will only pull one of them out. We in fact have this
situation
on our site too, at http://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/Reports/. I just
pull out
the "value". I think that usually gives all the information. For
example, if
you search like
http://www.statslab.cam.ac.uk/cgi-bin/resreps.pl?term=Turner&field=author
the "Turner" tells the whole story.
