I'm a current user of Analog 4.1.
For the past year, I've been using the caching techniques and saving them
to create a cumulative report. I wanted to actually gzip the cache files
and have analog read the compressed versions. I'm still looking through the
documentation to see if this will work. (I'm getting ahead of myself now
though <g>)...
Anyways, on the caching page, I was confronted with this:
>For most people, the cache file will not be needed: compressing the logfile
>using a standard compression utility such as gzip will be sufficient.
>Compressing a logfile is very efficient owing to the large number of
>repeated strings: I find about 12 times compression in practice. That in
>itself may solve your filespace problems, without needing to throw away any
That may be especially true, but it doesn't hold out for virtual hosting -
at least not in my case. Archiving four sets of log files for each of a few
hundred domains, with all log files approaching 30 megs uncompressed (3 or
so gzipped) eats up a lot of space rather quickly. It's just not something
I want to get into.
But I'm being picky.
I've looked at the upgrade notes. I just want to make sure - if I upgrade
from 4.1 to 5.03, the old 4.1 cache files will still be readable? I saw
this "The cache file now includes data on the first-request time of each
item.", but I don't care abotu first-request or last-request times...
I also worry about this line:
>The order of the lines in the report descriptions files has changed, so
>don't try to use the old versions.
If these have been FAQ'd before, let me know.
I have about a hundred 4.1 analog files to change...
