Possibly, if there were a persistent connection. But since Analog runs
one process per report, it would have to reconnect every time it ran.
This would be much slower than a flat-file disk access. Also, the
cache file is designed to very closely mimic the data Analog stores in
memory so there is not much memory overhead on using it and it's quite
fast.
I really don't think a database would be faster or less memory
intensive. And speed is a major issue in the design of Analog.

WebTrends produces more report types because it tries to count 'visit'
or 'session' statistics. It's notoriously bad at this (showing
obviously wrong results) and anyway, there's no way you can do that
accurately (see http://analog.sourceforge.net/docs/faq.html#faq131).
