Analog can be run on any machine (Web server or not). Running it on the Web server has the advantage of using local log files; running Analog on another machine means transferring server log(s) from the server to the machine that has analog. I haven't seen any directory restrictions in the documentation. Placing it in its own subdirectory inside the applications folder is probably very common. If your OS has common conventions for the placement of applications and/or utilities, following that convention can be helpful.
Pre-compliled executables exist for Windows, Mac, and other environments. However, a pre-compiled executable doesn't exist for all environments. For some environments, it is necessary to download source code, then compile it. Both source code and pre-compiled executable downloads are in compressed format. After downloading, uncompress and look for the instructions (source code and pre-compiled executable both have instructions). The best information on this topic is online at "http://www.analog.cx/download.html".
