You have not made a mistake. Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser does indeed identify itself in this way.
Back during the Browser Wars of 1994-96, it was important for browsers to say that they could understand the new HTML tags that Netscape introduced in Navigator version 4. Websites would often server out a different version of a web page to take advantage of the different HTML tags available in differeent browsers.
Microsoft browsers did this by including the word "Mozilla" (the code name for the Netscape browser code) in the USER_AGENT string, and the word "compatible" to point out that they weren't *really* Netscape Navigator.
