Hi James:

We observe similar patterns in log files, although usually the second
request delivered a few more bytes than the first.

Attempts to reproduce here (IE 6, Acrobat reader 5) did not create double
entries. I have the IE Tools | Settings "check for newer versions of stored
pages" set to "automatically" - have you tried changing that setting? While
this is not a solution, it might lead to understanding!

We have the same desire as you for pdf usage reporting - for licence
management purposes.

Subject: [analog-help] Two (2) HTTP GET 200's when getting a PDF file with
Acrobat 5/6, & IE 6

I noticed that for every PDF file, the initial retrieval (GET) results in
two web log entries. Both entries are identical (even the HTTP status code
of 200) except for a few seconds difference between the requests. This is
NOT the "HTTP request for every PDF page issue". It happens on the initial
retrieval of the file (no paging). I suspect that the Adobe Acrobat
integration with IE is such that two HTTP GETs are made - once for the
initial retrieval via IE and again when the file is finally opened by
Acrobat Reader (explaining the few seconds delay between the two GETs). If
the PDF is subsequently requested, a single GET is made and an HTTP 304 code
is returned for each request (as expected). Of course, I want the initial
requests to result in a single log file entry, not two log entries. Has
anyone else run across this? Many Thanks.
