Thanks Jeremy - I've written a LOGFORMAT command that just junks the "uri-query" and it works fine ...and I've raised the W3C spec issue with hosting company (but don't expect much joy there as they've had major problems with providing log files for nearly a year...and it's BT's webworld hosting service.
