That was the document I used to get this far, but I will read it in detail now. While I was trying to write out the format from the log file itself, I came across this link [ http://faq.1and1.com/miscellaneous/10.html ]on my web host's support site, so figured that would do.
to find out how. If you're still stuck, maybe post a bit of log her and someone might help

For reference, the logformat I used from the webhost help page is:
"%{Host}i %h %l %u %t \"%r\" %s %b \"%{Referer}i\" \"%{User-agent}i\" %b"(And I replaced quotes with parenthesis like analog's help suggested.)
