The string in the logfile is: "appie 1.1 (www.walhello.com)" (logfile includes the quotes).

I do not understand enough about logfile formats or syntax to
know if  appie/*  matches this well enough for the BROWEXCLUDE
command to work.

It's a standard (shell-style) wildcard matching system. '*' matches zero or more charcters. So 'appies/*' is looking for any User Agent that begins with 'appie/'. In this case, the user agent does not (it has no '/' in it). You should use something like this:


  BROWEXCLUDE appie*
