In my case, the served file is logged, not the pointer. Obviously, your experience is different. I can guess that a difference in versions might be the explanation. As I recall, I'm using 2.0.49.

I don't think that this is true. My copy of Apache logs the URL as requested, not the actual file served. If you are using URL rewriting in Apache (most people don't) then you might get the rewritten URL, but for symbolic links you are going to get the original request in the log file.
