In Introduction (2nd paragraph) and in What is a Log File,
you might do well to mention that the information recorded
can/does vary. Your reader's log files might differ from the
example that you provide (no referrer, no browser, etc.).

Greetings,

I'm working on an article that's intended to help new users get started using Analog. I have a very early draft posted: much remains to be written, but I think you could see where I'm going from what I have.

I'd be very interested to hear your comments on:

Web Server Log File Analysis with Analog
http://www.goingware.com/tips/log-file-analysis/

I was inspired to write the article because I had a really hard time getting started with analog, but after working at it for a while, I find analog to be an incredibly helpful and informative tool. I'd like to encourage more people to use Analog.

So far my article consists of three HTML pages plus one example report. I expect that when I'm done it will be fifteen to twenty pages. My intention is to give the non-technical reader a gentle introduction to command lines and config files, but to structure the article so that more technical readers can skip over the easy stuff. I will cover some more advanced topics.

A significant question is, how much detail should I go into in the material meant for novices? It would be easy for the article to go on for a hundred pages. My greatness weakness as a writer is that I write too much. I have trouble being concise. I am nothing if not verbose.

I should point out that my practice is to write many drafts of each of my articles, editing and rewriting heavily, so you can expect that even the three pages here will be much improved before I announce the article more widely, or link it from the rest of my site. I'm not able to work on it every day. I'm planning to complete it within a month or so.

This article is a new installment in GoingWare's Bag of Programming Tricks. There are about fifteen other articles on a wide range of topics at http://www.goingware.com/tips/ It's my first new article in a year.

The Analog article uses a new HTML/CSS design created by my wife Bonita back when she was doing web design. You'll see that it's about a million times better looking than the other pages on my site, which I must confess I designed myself. When I get the time to slog through it all, the whole rest of my site will look like the Analog article does.

Once I'm done writing the article, I'm going to add Google AdSense ads to it (https://www.google.com/adsense/). I've had such good results running the ads on my other pages so far that I have the hope that I can one day quit programming and just write for a living, earning my money from ads run on my articles.

But for that to happen, I'm going to need to write a lot more articles, and write them really well so people will want to read them. You can help me achieve this dream of mine, and also help a lot of novice webmasters if you can mail me helpful comments.

Thanks for your help,
