Maybe were getting into a place where my Unix skills are lacking but here is what's been done.  Analog is stored (install.sh) run in my home directory.  It is not in my documents folder.  The logfile directive is uncommented and reads as follows in the analog.cfg file:

/users/billkent/apachelogs/margatelogs/access_log

I have tested that path by copying it into a separate shell and preceding it with a tail command and it works perfectly.  So the path is legit, no errors  or permission problems in getting to the access file.

What you have done indicates that everything is OK for accessing the access log file.

Im not certain what you mean by over-riding, I make the change to analog.cfg and save it with a (:w) and then close it out.  I back out to the primary analog-6.0 directory and type analog... That is when I get the screen dump initially referenced.  In that dump, it indicates it is still looking for the access log at the following path:

Failed to open logfile /var/log/httpd/access_log.*:

analog has optional command-line arguments that can supercede directives in the analog.cfg file. If you use just 'analog' to (attempt to) generate the reports, then there are no command-line arguments. analog normally looks in the directory of the executable program for the analog.cfg file.

You state you 'back out to the primary "analog-6.0" directory' before executing the analog command. To me (again as someone who has not done this on a Mac) it sounds as if analog is finding the config file, but no the one you have customized. See if there is an analog.cfg in the same directory as the analog executable. Also you may need to check the analog-Mac documentation for the default location(s) of the config file.

I dont understand where that path is feeding in from.  Thanks for your continued help.

Thanks,

Leonard,

I have edited analog.cfg to point to the correct location and it doesnt appear to be picking up the config.  Is there another place where the LOGFILE directive should be edited?  Thanks for your help...

Bill,

FIrst check to make sure that you are not overriding your changed LOGFILE directive with an incorrect one, either in the config file or on the command line.  If that is not the problem, then please post the error messages, the relevant portion of the config file(s), and the command you are using to run analog.

Bill,

I am not a Mac user, but I do have a bit of experience on Unix and the latest Mac is  based on that. I waited for a day to see if any of the Mac people would answer. I hope my knowledge of Unix carries over to the Mac for you.

Jason,

I just downloaded the Darwin version and installed it into the /tmp folder
in my home directory.  I've edited the analog.cfg folder as follows:

If you need a LOGFORMAT command (most people don't -- try it without
first!),
LOGFORMAT COMBINED
LOGFILE "MacintoshHD:Users:billkent:apachelogs:margatelogs:access_log"
# LOGFILE /Users/billkent/apachelogs/margatelogs/access_log
 OUTFILE "MacintoshHD:Library:Webserver:Documents:Report.html"
# HOSTNAME "Margate on the Beach"

I'm having it write out Report.html to my Documents folder where I can see
it on my website.  When I go into the /tmp/analog directory...it dumps out
the following in the window:

In Unix, the /tmp directory should not be used for anything that needs to remain around for over a day. If you are referring to the tmp directory in your home directory, then there is not a problem. You should the notation tmp/analog (note the missing leading '/').

It appears that analog cannot find you Apache access log file. It is looking at /var/log/httpd/access_log.*. Check to make sure there really is a log file there and it is readable by analog (i.e., your account). If it's not there you will need to set the LOGFILE directive to point to the correct location.  The remainder of the messages are a result of not log records to analyze.
