If you want to know how often your index.html page was accessed, why not
grep index.html? There are a number of reasons why banner.gif wouldn't
necessarily be requested by everyone who accesses your home page.

That's not quite what Analog says - it says that, because of the way the web
works, you can never be entirely sure how many people have visited your
site, no matter what information you have in your log files.

I've had?

No - you're just wasting your time by grepping your logfile before running
Analog (at least in this case).

One of the most basic Analog commands is "FILEINCLUDE". If you add
"FILEINCLUDE /index.html" to your config file, Analog will report on just
the requests for your home page. You can choose to interpret the number of
hosts served as the number of visitors, though how "accurate" that is as a
metric very much depends on the type of audience that you are serving.

You might also want to see if using FILEINCLUDE */banner.gif instead always
gives you the same answer.
