Okay, I got it working now. I was trying that before, and it wasn't making any difference in the report output. Turns out I had the syntax wrong (I was listing multiple words on the same line, rather than one word per SEARCHWORDEXCLUDE line).
Thank you for confirming my original suspicion that SEARCHWORDEXCLUDE was what I needed!
