I haven't heard of this on CentOS, but the problem you describe is a
known problem on Mac OS X. It appears to be a fault in the DNS
libraries, but I tried and failed several times to get Apple engineers
to fix it. I wonder if CentOS is using the same libraries.

I echo Aengus's answer that a separate DNS helper app is probably the
way forward.
