Change those links to point to an internal page that redirects to
the external site with a meta "Refresh" tag:
<html><head><meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0;
URL=http://external.site/externalpage.htm";></head><body></BODY></HTML>
Then count the hits by counting the internal redirect pages.
