Might I also suggest Ilyse that you get a good electronic Bible set that you 
can load up many versions and as you copmpare you will learn the value of 
getting into the Hebrew roots. Start with the free E-sword and load with the 
following.
ASV
HOT
HOT+
KJV
KJV+
YLT
LITV
JSP

You may want to add in a couple of paraphrases like NIV and the Message to see 
how terrible they really are.
