The original pictograph for this letter is a picture of an ox head - representing strength and power from the work performed by the animal. This pictograph also represents a chief or other leader. The Aleph is translated into English an an "A". Best research reveals that the Hebrew Scribes in or about the 10th century added what is vowel marks you will now see in the Modern Jewish writing. The use of the "E", as best as I can find started sometime between the 10th and 16th century. Keeping in mind the the English did not exist until the 10th century.
