Well I am a champion of the literal myself. I agree with Michael although I
would differ on the timing. I believe Israel becomes Israel in Gen 32:28 when
jacob receives the name Yisrael. I believe the kick-off to establish the
nation begins with the Blessings given to each tribe just before Jacob's death.

In regards to the idea "they had the choice: follow YHWH or be slaves in Egypt,
I would say they were already supposed to be following God while living in
Egypt
it wasn't until they had long departed doing so when God allowed the Assyrian
to
become Pharaoh and they were enslaved. They were doomed to repeat this many
times, albeit with different rulers over many generations.

Hmmmm, with all respect, I think you’re being too literal. Many Jews,
especially
Orthodox, engage in a [beautiful] ritual while davening that involves
repetitive
bowing at the waist. Like head-bowing in Christianity, the ritual bowing of
some
Jews while Davening is NOT required. Indeed, in my Church, some of us bow our
heads, others raise their hands, others kneel, and so forth. What postures one
assumes while praying is generally a matter of individual preference, not
religious doctrine.

>2. Jews chose ADONAI
As for myself, I may be too literal as well, but I would just point out that
G-d
chose Israel , not the Jews (Jews and Judaism did not exist until the kingdom
of
Judah was established (following the death of Saul). More specifically, G-d
chose Abraham from whom the children of Israel (nee Jacob) arose. Indeed, if
one
looks at the arc of the Biblical narrative, the “jews” were not really offered
a
choice apart from follow YHWH or perish in slavery.

Blessings,

Michael

My 7-12 YO education by Orthodox Judaism which I got right after public school,
M-Th and Sunday.  Based on Siddur Hebrew.  Bible was not an option.  Kept
secret
as a matter of fact.  Only kissed it on holidays:)

1. Jews do not bow their heads.
2. Jews chose ADONAI.

I'm 81YO and still holds me prisoner;)  However, in the past two years I've
been
allowed to use the proper word, YHWH, publicly.
