Again, not knowing Hebrew but seeking to understand the comments about the Name
in the 1906 edition online of the jewishenclopedia, it said that JEHOVAH is "A
mispronunciation (introduced by Christian theologians, but almost entirely
disregarded by the Jews) of the Hebrew "Yhwh," the (ineffable) name of God (the
Tetragrammaton or "Shem ha-Meforash"). This pronunciation is grammatically
impossible; it arose through pronouncing the vowels of the "ḳere"
(marginal reading of the Masorites: = "Adonay") with the consonants of the
"ketib" (text-reading: = "Yhwh")—"Adonay" (the Lord) being substituted with
one exception wherever Yhwh occurs in the Biblical and liturgical books."
(etc.) I was not arguing about the first sentence there (mispronunciation),
because we know that the "J" sound has no place in Hebrew, therefore Jeremiah,
Joshua, etc., can all be called "mispronunciations" if we want to use that type
of language or reasoning. It was the "gramatically incorrect" part that made me
wonder, what IS he talking about? Then the writer of the article goes on the
talk about the vowel placement and marginal readings, etc., which led me to
believe that maybe somehow the "grammar?" of the word was really incorrect? Of
course I don't know the further points he made without pulling my hair out. I
am a novice and do not want to get into arguments over this, it has been
pointed out by members of the board that the reason (perhaps) it was stated as
being "technically incorrect" is for the same reason that the name of Abraham
is also "technically incorrect" since the name MEANS something and in purest of
senses should be translated by pictures?? If this is so, it is more
understandable why HaShem has described himself and who he is by more than his
Name. He has also defined his name to a large extent, as far as I understand,
and various translators evidently have put forth varying degrees of what I AM
means. Again, I'm not sure and am seeking to understand why the writer of the
article which is quoted again and again on the internet, says the name JEHOVAH
is "grammatically impossible." The best and most understandable answer I have
received so far is the writer may have said this because Hebrew is an alphabet
based on pictographs, those letters or pictographs have meaning in themselves.
And so based on that, the original writer said that Jehovah is grammatically
impossible. Which doesn't make sense to me, but that's where I'm up to right
now.
