For the purposes of this reply, "Activity A" is the one calling startActivity() or startActivityForResult(), and "Activity B" is the one being started as a result. startActivityForResult() is used when Activity A needs to know when Activity B has been exited and what the result of B's work was. You can implement the onActivityResult() callback in Activity A to find out when B is completed. startActivity(), on the other hand, is when Activity A just needs Activity B to start and does not care what happens with Activity B in the future.
