That sounds like a problem with eclipse. Did you install from repositories? I recommend upgrading to Eclipse 3.4 Ganymede directly from the eclipse.orgwebsite. Just keep the extracted eclipse folder wherever is convenient for you. Also, apt-get remove your current eclipse installation before starting any serious work. Your Java JDK should be sufficient. Follow these instructions for installation with 3.4 and you should be good to go. I have tested on vanilla Hardy. http://code.google.com/android/intro/installing.html
