Got help on this just yesterday. I will hazard a guess that you are
selecting "Require SSL (TLS) Always". If you select this, and the
handset mail client doesn't recognize the certificate authority, it
will whine. If you instead select "Require SSL (TLS) When Available"
it will go ahead and use the SSL cert from the unrecognized CA without
whining about it.

Thanks to an unnamed Android developer for helping to straighten me
out on this. In theory, I convinced T-Mobile to add this solution to
their problem data set, but not clear whether they actually have yet.
