You can definitely load apps on it via a USB cable...with the SDK tools. 
I am not sure if there is some way to do it without them.

However, there are a dozen or so over-the-air (OTA) markets beyond 
Android Market (a.k.a., "the Google store"), such as SlideME, 
AndAppStore, Handango, Mobihand, and the like. Plus, you can distribute 
your application's APK file from your own Web site -- if your Web server 
serves it up with the proper MIME type:

application/vnd.android.package-archive

it will install when the user downloads the file.
