Since I'm a beginner as well, I would give you my two cents by saying, all files are readable....it's the file headers and encoding you have to watch out for. Goes without saying for any language or dev enviorment.
Try stripping the file of an extension then read the contents as a text file? and possibly create a local version un-encoded. Or just read up on how the OS reads such files, via say xml?
