It all depends on your taste, as one of the replies mentioned go to your local bookstore and check out some of the material there. One book that I did like is "Unlocking Android". Although it's being updated regularly by the author, if you purchase the soft copy then the publisher will send you email updates to download the latest version for free of course. For the Java side Head First series usually does a good job in explaining new concepts so check out the Head First Java book for learning core Java.
