Sounds a lot like my experience, though I have almost NO Java
background.

This, however, is opposite my experience. Following one of the many
excellent guides available online for installing the development
environment, I was up and running within a couple of hours on both my
XP and Ubuntu boxes.

Sorry, but this information is not helpful at all. Perhaps if you gave
some specific information, someone could help you with this problem.
Imagine if an end user of one of your programs complained about
"cryptic error messages" and expected you to fix the problem based on
just that info.

Are you perhaps confusing "Project name" with "Package name"? For
example, when you create a new Android Project in Eclipse, after you
enter the -Project- name, an error message above saying "-Package-
name must be specified" appears. There are three text boxes in a group
names "Properties" that must be filled out before you can continue

My day job is as an .NET and ASP programmer. Visual Studio is my IDE
of choice. I think the only way I could be MORE of an Android "non-
insider" is if I actually worked at Microsoft. Despite that
"handicap," however, I've been very impressed with the Android SDK.
No, it's not perfect, but every development platform has its
frustrating quirks that require time to learn and work-around (see
above r.e.: Visual Studio).
I've also found that, in addition to the available resources available
through Google and others, the Android development community
(including this google group) is an excellent resource. Every time
I've asked a question, even a stupid one, I've received excellent
advice. If you're serious about learning Android development, I'd
recommend taking a step back, working through the project again, and
asking clear, concise questions when you get stumped. You'd be amazed
how much help you can receive by asking politely.
