You have a few options you can take

1) Download and install MyBackup. This application allows you to
backup your entire phone, including the Application's APK's, along
with your SMS messages.
If you want to restore them at any given point, fire up MyBackup, hit
Restore, find the backup and restore!

2) You can backup the SMS' with SMS Backup (app name). I'm not sure if
this app is currently in the market, but I remember it backed up my
sms's to my gmail account.

I'd take option 1. MyBackup is a very handy utility.

Let me know if you have anymore problems.
