Yes that's correct, if you have rooted your phone and install the
official T-Mobile update, you'll lose root.

I installed the T-Mobile cupcake update without root to begin with.
Just put it on the SD card, name it 'update.zip' and reboot, holding
down the home button.  Super easy.
