Thanks for the help.  The other link got me through regedit using this

but I still had issues getting the correct driver through vista.  even
after deleting the regedit keys.  I did get it to work, sort of by
accident though.  I went to try out the beta for pdanet and alot of it
was automatic, including the driver I needed for vista.  So, after
that installation, I deleted the windows driver again, redeleted the
regedit stuff, and plugged my phone back in.  pdanet had done the
setup and it ended up installing the correct driver.  Anyway,  I
double checked to see if tetherbot worked now in firefox and bingo!
So thanks again for your help.  and sorry I didn't read on, waste your
time at all.
