It seems to me like this should be posted in another group (maybe the "Android Discuss" google group) since this group is more for developing for Android.
However, Task Manager (now the current version is 1.7) provides a way to close running tasks... just long press on the task and choose "Delete" from the popup menu. That way you don't have to hit the back key 30 times to exit a program that has launched a lot of activities. The newest version also provides a way to view (and close if you so desire) a list of actively running processes (that run in the background). Perhaps you have a lot of programs that are doing stuff in the background without you being aware about it? BEWARE: It shows ALL processes, including those needed by Android to run. Closing those may cause your phone to become unstable. Also, do you have a lot of widget's on the desktop? Depending on how they were designed, these could cause something like that to happen.
