Service is a faceless UI-less application component. You need a "trigger" to start it, either from an Activity which then may go away or in response to a broadcast intent from a BroadcastReceiver that may call the Service's startService method. (Note, you can't bind to the service from a broadcast Receiver, you can only call the startService method.).
