It's a little to much to explain here, have a read of: http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/ui_guidelines/activity_task_design.html and http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/fundamentals.html
But basically pressing [home] puts your task into the background, it does NOT finish it (even though the process may be killed). When you return to your application it is restarted from where it left off. There are quite a few ways of changing this behaviour see "Launch modes" in the second link above.
